This system reads small EAN13 barcodes that are present on random positioned products in a retail basket. Our mission was to read the barcodes, even if they are placed on round objects like cabbages, or if they are placed on wrinkled foil or even below shiny transparant plastic. The codes are printed as small as 9 x 25mm.
The baskets pass below the camerasystem with a speed of 40 m/min. This is very fast if you consider that the tiniest motionblur makes a barcode unreadable. As if these specs are not hard enough, the system had to cope with large depth of field.(+-360mm) So a code on a shallow product in a stack of 1 basket needs to read just a good as a code on top of a high product in a stack of 2 baskets.
This system was combined with a 3D retail basket inspection (see basketinspection). All the processing is done by 1 computer.
